The Holidays are a wonderful time of year; filled with friends, family and food! With a few minor substitutions you can still enjoy your favorite holiday treats and maintain a healthy diet. Here are a few tips for healthier eating this holiday season:

1.) Use natural Spices and ingredients as sweeteners. Reducing sugar by half of what the regular recipe calls for and substituting the sweetness with citrus, vanilla, cinnamon or nutmeg is an effective healthy, yet delicious cooking strategy. Even honey and molasses can be used to add a touch of healthier sweetness to a favorite dessert or holiday beverage.
2.) Substitute fat with healthy alternatives. When baking, use unsweetened applesauce, mashed bananas and prune puree to make a surprisingly delightful substitute for fatty ingredients. Instead of using whole milk, use skim milk in dessert and drink recipes. Substituting half of the fat with the desired alternative can make a huge difference.
3.) Slash the salt with lower-sodium options. Substitute salt with fresh herbs and flavored vinegars. And when it comes to condiments such as mustard, pickles, and ketchup, try fresh tomatoes, salsa, or cucumber slices.

We hope you find these suggestions useful and we wish you all a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season!
